In an interesting lecture, Don Norman extended his human action cycle model, by including a second “intelligent” machine action cycle. This gives rise to three new gaps:
- Goal Gap: Goals of Machine and Person can be different
- Action Gap: The actions taken (or want to undertake)
- Knowledge Gap: Machine and Person don’t know the same things
Norman being -a good popularizer- avoids explicitly using Distributed Cognition or ANT: this leads to a weaker model (I cannot imagine an analyses using it). But as a simplified notion it is an excellent teaching tool that communicates these notions, especially to designers.
